Christmas is over, you’re looking over your new years eve memories, and your bank account is probably shaking its head at you. For most of us, we will have to wait five weeks till payday, and suddenly you are feeling very low. The January Blues have now arrived.
The thrills of the festive season are over. We are back at work, with the colder nights and unlimited rain. January is not my favourite time of year, and if you are reading this, you probably feel the same way.
Like many others across the world, I grab my umbrella and my scarf and set out into the world.
To help you get through the woes of January, here are four things you can do to up your mood and beat the blues.
#1 – Do things that make you happy.
I know it sounds simple, well it has been proven time after time, that one of the quickest ways to up your viva is to do something you ACTUALLY enjoy. This requires some action points on your end; set some time aside in the evening, to read that book you have been thinking about. Make some plans with friends or family or even yourself and go out and unwind. Anything that makes you happy make sure you do it!
#2 – Do one act of self-care a day.
You only have one body and mind so take good care of it. If you aren’t looked after you can’t help anyone else. 2019 was the year of self-care, so take that into in 2020 with you. From getting you a face mask to switching off your phone when you get in, even just sleeping! do anything that is about making you feel like number one. (self-care also means treating yourself to a bottle of wine too!)
#3 – Don’t let your New Year resolutions kill you.
There is always this pressure with new years resolutions and having to stick to them, and a lot of the time they are the cause of why a lot of people beat themselves up.
Take it easy with those big resolution goals and start small. Said you would go to the gym three times a week? Make it two times and maybe walk instead of grabbing the bus up the road.
Making your goals less overwhelming will have you feeling less overwhelmed and hopefully steer you away from the call of the blues.
#4 Understand What is worrying you
There are so many reasons why people feel low around this time of year, from shorter days to terrible weather to the long extended payday. So understanding why you are feeling so low helps combat the post-Christmas blues and enables you to create an action plan that you can arm yourself with, to avoid any triggers that may make it worse.
If money is your worry – stop checking your bank account, stop thinking about payday. If its the lack of daylight getting you down try and enjoy the sunlight that we do get (and if you can keep your lights on at home when you get in)
If it is multiple things – WRITE. IT. DOWN. This helps you identify the issues that you can solve short term and put in place solutions.
I say all this to say January blues are part of life – but your approach is all controlled by you, and before you know it’s February, and we are now gearing up for a month of Love. Don’t be so hard yourself and takes the blues by the horn.
